AI Can Generate. Can Children Still Decide?
A studio-based exploration of how children develop judgment, attention, and agency through sustained creative practice in the age of AI.
Generative AI can produce images, text, ideas, and solutions within seconds. As the cost of generating output continues to fall, education faces a deeper question:
How do we help children develop the human capacity to decide what matters?
This SXSW EDU 2027 PanelPicker proposal brings the work of CCH ART NOW into the international conversation surrounding AI, education, and human development.
Drawing from sustained studio observations and practice-based cases, the session examines how long-duration engagement with physical materials creates opportunities for children to exercise attention, judgment, agency, persistence, and adaptive decision-making.
SESSION FOCUS
Decision-making under uncertainty
Working without predetermined answers requires children to choose, evaluate, revise, and continue.
Structural thinking through making
Physical materials make relationships between intention, structure, resistance, and consequence visible.
Attention & presence
Long-duration creative practice creates conditions for sustained engagement in an increasingly fragmented attention environment.
Human agency in the AI era
As automated systems become increasingly capable of generating outputs, the capacity to form judgments, maintain decisions, and act with intention becomes increasingly consequential.
WHY THIS CONVERSATION MATTERS
The question facing education extends beyond how children will use AI.
It concerns the human capacities they will carry into a world where intelligent systems can increasingly generate answers for them.
CCH ART NOW explores how material-based studio practice can function as a space for developing these capacities through lived experience: encountering uncertainty, making choices, responding to resistance, revising decisions, and carrying an idea forward over time.
